We are in need of volunteers over the age of 13 for our 9 week summer YESS camp for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one full week at YESS camp and are encouraged to volunteer as many weeks as possible. Camp hours are 8:00am - 5:00pm. We provide all meals and snacks for volunteers while at YESS camp.
YESS camp starts each day at Woodman elementary school in south Wichita. USD 259 special education teachers come to Woodman Elementary in the morning and we have 10 different classes for our campers. Volunteers are assigned to a classroom in the mornings to help campers with any activities they are doing. In the afternoons, campers are in 5 different recreation groups depending on age and ability. Volunteers assist staff in caring for campers and ensuring they are safe and involved in all activities. Volunteers and staff are expected to participate in all activities that campers are doing, including swimming. Campers participate in activities throughout the city and surrounding areas. At the end of the day, YESS camp ends at The Arc of Sedgwick County.
Volunteering at YESS Camp is a very rewarding opportunity. Volunteers are able to build relationships with campers and create life-long bonds. Many of our volunteers move on to a staff position at YESS camp and several even pursue careers in special education. Volunteering at YESS camp is fun and definitely a unique experience. YESS camp starts on May 29, 2018 and runs Monday-Friday through July 27, 2018.
