Every year WAMPO coordinates an annual count of bicycle and pedestrian activity across 42 different sites across Sedgwick, Butler, and Sumner Counties.

To effectively gather this information, we rely on a team of volunteers to spend two-hour blocks at each site, counting bicycle riders and pedestrians.

Each volunteer will receive a safety vest, counting forms and a clipboard, a stack of public interest fliers, and an information packet to take to their designated counting site that includes the following:

  1. A site information sheet that shows images and maps of your assigned site
  2. Information about suggested parking locations
  3. Details about the type of site you will be counting at

  • Wednesday, September 13: 10 AM - 12 PM
  • Wednesday, September 13: 5 - 7 PM
  • Thursday, September 14: 10 AM - 12 PM
  • Thursday, September 14: 5 -7 PM
  • Saturday, September 16:12 - 2 PM

Inclement Weather Plan: Inclement Weather Plan for the 2023 Bike-Ped Count: In case of inclement weather, WAMPO will move the Bike-Ped count to the week of September 25. Meanwhile, due to expected high temperatures, we advise volunteers to take the following precautions: Hot Weather Protection Guidance: 1. Stay Hydrated: Drink water at least every 20 minutes to stay hydrated throughout the count. 2. Wear Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen before heading out and reapply as needed to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. 3. Dress Appropriately: Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool and comfortable during the count. 4. Wear Hats and Sunglasses: Wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses to shield yourself from direct sunlight. 5. Bring An Umbrella: If possible, bring a large umbrella to provide you with shade. 6. Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion: Be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, heavy sweating, headache, nausea, and weakness. If you or your counting partner experience symptoms of heat exhaustion, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that you act fast by doing the following: move to a cooler area, loosen clothing, sip cool water, and seek medical help if symptoms don’t improve. The symptoms of heat stroke include confusion, dizziness, or becoming unconscious. If you or your counting partner experiences the symptoms of heatstroke, the CDC recommends that you call 911, move the person to a cooler area, loosen clothing and remove extra layers, and cool with water or ice. In addition, if you or your counting partner experience these symptoms, please notify the WAMPO staff immediately. 7. Buddy System: Look out for each other's well-being and recognize signs of heat-related issues.
